Description:
In The Glory of Ray, Kathryn Tyndall pays homage to Ray Charles' broad influence across
musical genres.
Each back panel features decorative motifs drawn from the genres he shaped - jazz, blues,
gospel, soul, and more.
Metal fixtures of saxophones and trumpets transform into organ air passages, bridging
performance and architecture.
Drawing on Charles' South Carolina roots, Tyndall incorporates patterns from
ironwood-backed
African-American drums that once sustained communication among enslaved peoples.
These drum motifs appear in the organ finials and below-panel designs, then are woven into
the
fabric pattern of Charles' jacket, symbolizing resilience, rhythm, and legacy.
